False alarms have always been a problem with burglar alarms systems. New changes have been made with the introduction of a new ACPO Policy and Draft release of British Standard DD243. The biggest changes have been in the methods available for setting and unsetting of systems and the requirement of only confirmed activations being passed to the Police, this has dramatically cut wasted Police time attending to false alarms, one of the biggest causes being customer error.

Most installations will be a combination of the following components.
- Control Equipment - Located centrally this houses a low voltage power supply unit, standby battery and the system processor.
- Remote Setting Unit - This would be one or more digital keypads or keyfob readers used to set and unset the system.
- External Sounder - Mounted in a prominent position on the property this has an electronic sounder and standby battery a xenon strobe light and anti tamper sensors.
- Internal Sounder - Normally located near the entry exit door this provides an audible indication that the system is setting or needs unsetting, it also provides an alarm sound inside the premises when the system is activated.
- Remote Signalling Equipment - When the system is activated this signals to an Alarm Receiving Centre (ARC) via a telephone line or cellular network, on receipt of the correct signals the ARC will report the activation to the emergency services.
- Magnetic Contact - Fitted to doors and windows these detect an opening and report to the Control Equipment.
- Movement Detector - Located throughout the property these sense movement and report to the Control Equipment.
- Other Detection Devices - These can include shock sensors, break glass detectors, infra red beams and protective wiring, all designed to provide early detection of an intrusion.

Prevent false alarms by following these simple hints and tips:-
Ensure all users and keyholders are aware of the setting and unsetting procedures, know what to do if the alarm is activated and are provided with the necessary information to reset the system.
Make sure all new staff are fully trained and be aware of users who may not normally operate the system having to do so during holidays or other staff absence.
Check doors and windows are shut and blow heaters are off before leaving the premises also ensure no rodents or birds have entered during the day.
Are the cats and dogs in non alarmed areas behind secure doors.
Keep movement detectors clear of cobwebs and obstructions.
Do not hang decorations or advertising boards in front of movement detectors.
Fax machines, modems and data terminals used on the same telephone line as the alarm system can cause line fault conditions to be reported.
Let us know if you are planning any changes to the building, have any problems with the system or if the power is being turned off for an extended period.
